Joe Clark ha publicat un artícle a A list apart anomenat Facts and Opinions About PDF Accessibility.

Aquest és un tema important d'accessibilitat i usabilitat que potser quedi entre dues aigües ja que no és propiament un format web però té un ús molt extès com a document empaquetat.

Com a resposta a la pregunta És accessible un PDF? em quedaria amb el fragment:

[...]There are too many PDFs on the web. Most every PDF should be something other than PDF. Any simple text-and-graphics document that is typeset in a single column should be provided as an ordinary HTML+CSS+JavaScript web page. Really, I can’t think of any exceptions for simple documents.[...]

També m'ha agradat el fragment politicament incorrecte que respon als desenvolupadors massa preocupats per l'accessibilitat fins al punt de perdre el nord —com jo mateix, a vegades!—:

[...]The complaint that you have to use a “special program” to read a PDF document is bogus. You’re already using a special program to read an HTML document. It’s just that you use that program so much it no longer seems special. [...]

    Respecte al darrer paràgraf, no estic d'acord. Si un navegador web és un programa especial (al contexte de la web), ¿quin programa no ho és? Si tots els programes són especials, aquest adjectiu perd el seu significat.

    Recordem que la web es transmet per HTTP, i les seves primeres sigles volen dir hyper texte. Una navegador enten hyper texte, mentre que un visor de PDF no, perque un PDF, clarament no és texte, ni té la mateixa finalitat que la web (recordo que és un format clarament orientat a presentació).

    Quan parla d'especial jo entenc que vol dir específic. Justament crec que ho ressalta per això mateix.
    El problema, crec, apareix quan el PDF s'extén i pren ús de document "que tothom pot obrir" (i per tant llegir). És llavors quan s'ha de veure si realment és per tothom o no.

    Quan he vist que s'usa PDF no m'ha semblat mai que ho facin pensant en un format especial d'impressió sinó més aviat perquè no és modificable i/o perquè "tothom pot obrir-lo".

    De l'artícle hi ha coses amb les que no estic d'acord però el trobo encertat pel fet de dir les coses amb més cruesa que no els politicament correctes que acaben no dient res per no ofendre ningú.

    El darrer paràgraf de l'artícle és:

    PDF accessibility is OK some of the time when it’s handled by competent authors with what few tools are available. All of those components need improvement, but let’s not pretend we don’t already have the power to create accessible PDFs. We do.

    Durant l'artícle però parla, crec que força clarament, que els usuaris cecs no són els més afectats sinó que passarien a ser els que tenen algun problema motriu per culpa de la particular manera de fer scroll.
